Press Release August 5, 2022 from Aransas County, Texas
Rockport Center for the Ars Parking Lot Project
Back in 2018 while the Rockport Center for the Arts Board of Directors was planning their new Art center, it was apparent more parking was needed to handle large events. the site surrounding the Historic Train Depot was available so the County purchased it. The Train Depot and remaining land was donated to the Rockport Cultural Arts District to preserve the Train Depot so that guest and citizens can learn about the history of the railroad in Aransas County.
The County hired Hanson Engineering to design the parking lot and Marshall Company, Inc. was contracted to build the project. The groundbreaking for the parking lot was February 2022 and the project was completed on August 3, 2022.
The parking lot is 60 spaces with a concrete surface and includes landscaping, security overhead lighting and irrigation. There are sidewalks and crosswalks so the people can walk to the Art Center or to other downtown establishments. The parking lot will be open to the public and will be owned and operated by the City of Rockport.
The funding for this project came from the Community Development Block Grant program. The CDBG-DR grant is a HUD program administered by the Texas General Land Office (GLO). This project was made possible because of the Hurricane Harvey Recovery program.
On August 31, 2022 at 9:00am our community will celebrate the ribbon cutting of this wonderful addition to our downtown, putting us one more step towards the recovery of our community.
