“Cultural Interface” – Major Public Art Initiative

The Rockport Cultural Arts District is proud to be partnering with the Aransas County Navigation District to install a major public artwork, a sculpture project by renowned Rockport artist Steve Russell. RCAD will be raising funds for “Cultural Interface,” symbolizing the impact of Europeans on the area. Russell is shown with wax models of two of three figures, a pirate and conquistador, that will join a missionary in a grouping that will be placed on top of large rock about 40′ in the Bay near the south end of Rockport Beach. (Sculptures installed in water, like the famous Little Mermaid in Copenhagen, can be seen around the world.) The second grouping of a Karankawa family will be installed on shore. The bronze statues will be nine feet, rather than the six-feet models shown. Russell was one of the founders of the Rockport Art Association, which later became the Rockport Center for the Arts.
