Texas Maritime Museum Exhibit Opening – From Sketch to Seaworthy: The Legendary Farley Boats of Texas

July 11 @ 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm

On Thursday, July 11, from 5:00 to 6:30 PM, a reception will be held to celebrate the opening of a new exhibit at the Texas Maritime Museum – “From Sketch to Seaworthy: The Legendary Farley Boats of Texas.” The exhibit, brought to the Museum by the Port Aransas Preservation and Historical Association (PAPHA), presents the history of the boats that revolutionized tarpon fishing on the Texas Coast in the 1900’s.
Posters, models, tools, and video illustrate the evolution of the Farley boats, that became the standard for tarpon fishing. Special guests include Frankie Cabrera from the Farley Boatworks, who will relate the latest in local boat building, and Jim Moloney, local author, who will sign his recent book, The Tarpon Club. Light refreshments will be served.
Three generations of the Farley family designed and built boats at three different locations in Port Aransas beginning in 1915. The boats were designed to handle the choppy Gulf water where anglers and fishing guides sought tarpon. The high quality boats, originally made of cypress, and later mahogany, were designed and built by the family until 1975. Famous Farley Boat enthusiasts include Franklin Delano Roosevelt who visited Port Aransas in 1936 and 1937 to fish for tarpon.
The Texas Maritime Museum, the official maritime museum of the State of Texas, located at 1202 Navigation Circle in Rockport, was founded to educate, curate, and preserve Texas’ maritime history for today and posterity. The museum is open Tuesday – Saturday from 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM, and admission is free for all ages.
